The tricky part is that hail damage rarely looks dramatic. Your roof can take a serious beating and still look "fine" from the driveway — while the protective surface of your shingles is quietly failing.
After more than 20 years inspecting roofs across central Oklahoma, we've learned that the homeowners who act early save the most money. Below are the seven signs of hail damage we look for, what they mean, and why a professional inspection is the only way to know for sure.
1. Bruised or Soft Shingles
A hail "bruise" is a spot where the impact has fractured the shingle's mat beneath the surface. You often can't see it — you feel it. When we press a bruised area, it has a soft, springy give, much like pressing on a bruise on your arm. These weak spots let water work its way in over time and are one of the most common forms of hail damage on asphalt roofs.
2. Cracked or Split Shingles
Larger hail can crack shingles outright, splitting them and exposing the layers underneath. Cracks compromise the shingle's ability to shed water and make the surrounding shingles more vulnerable to wind uplift in the next Oklahoma storm. Cracking is more visible than bruising but still easy to miss from the ground.
3. Granule Loss
The colored granules on asphalt shingles aren't just for looks — they shield the asphalt below from the sun and weather. Hail knocks these granules loose, and once they're gone, UV rays accelerate the breakdown of the shingle. Two telltale signs: bare, darker patches on the shingles themselves, and a buildup of granules (like coarse black sand) in your gutters and at the bottom of downspouts.
Quick check: After a hailstorm, look in your gutters and at the base of downspouts. A pile of granules is one of the easiest early warning signs you can spot from the ground — and a good reason to book a free roof inspection.
4. Dented Vents, Gutters, and Flashing
Metal components are your roof's "canary in the coal mine." Soft aluminum and thin metal show hail strikes clearly, so we always check roof vents, gutters, downspouts, valley flashing, and any metal trim. If your gutters and vents are dented, your shingles almost certainly took hits too — even if those hits are harder to see.
5. Exposed Fiberglass Mat
When hail strips away both the granules and the top asphalt layer, it exposes the fiberglass mat underneath. This is serious damage — the shingle has lost its waterproofing in that spot and is on a fast track to leaking. Exposed mat is a strong indicator that a roof needs significant repair or replacement.
6. Soft Spots Underfoot
Widespread bruising creates areas of the roof that feel soft or spongy when walked on (which is exactly why this should be left to a trained, insured roofer rather than a homeowner on a ladder). Soft spots signal that the structural integrity of the shingles has been compromised across a section of the roof, not just in one place.
7. Damage to Other Surfaces Around the Home
Your roof doesn't take hits in isolation. If you see dents in your gutters, dings on your AC unit's fins, cracked window screens, chips in deck paint, or damaged siding and fascia, that's strong circumstantial evidence your roof was hit hard too. Insurance adjusters look at this "collateral" damage as well, so it's worth documenting.
Why Hail Damage Is Often Invisible From the Ground
Here's the part that surprises most homeowners: the most damaging hail impacts — bruising and early granule loss — usually can't be seen from your yard. A roof can pass the "eyeball test" from the curb and still have dozens of compromised shingles. That's why we never recommend judging your roof from the ground after a storm. By the time leaks appear inside the house, the damage has often been spreading for months.
There's also a time element in Oklahoma. Insurance policies generally require you to file a claim within a set window after the storm date, so waiting until you "see a problem" can mean missing your chance at coverage. What to Do After an Oklahoma Hailstorm

- Look for the ground-level signs above — granules in gutters, dented metal, damaged screens and AC fins.
